A vehicle’s cooling system is just as vital in the winter as it is in the summer. If your radiator freezes up, then your entire engine could overheat. For this reason, you’ll want to bring your vehicle into our auto center to make sure that your cooling system is working proper condition and that your antifreeze is clean and current.

How Often Should the Antifreeze Be Changed?

The most common question we get from vehicle owners is how often antifreeze should be changed. Although every car is different, the general rule of thumb is that you should bring into the shop for a change every 20,000 miles. The timeline equivalent of that is once a year. So, in essence, you should have your antifreeze flushed out and replaced annually.

Is There a Difference Between Antifreeze and Coolant?

The short answer is no. Antifreeze and coolant are made from the same chemicals. The difference is in their application. Coolant contains more water and keeps an engine from overheating all year long. So if you have coolant in your car all 12 months of the year, your engine and several other components are all protected from extreme heat.

Antifreeze, on the hand, contains little to no water outside of the normal mixture. Its sole purpose is to remain in liquid form no matter how cold the temperature gets outside. So while it is not essential to change out your coolant for strict antifreeze, it is smarter.

Living in Minnesota the temperatures can drop and create a brutal climate during the winter. Antifreeze simply protects your system better coolant. For this reason, we recommend that you bring your car in, have the coolant flushed, and replace it with antifreeze. This is a simple process for our technicians and can be done in only a few minutes. It’s also an affordable way to keep your engine from becoming overheated, thus costing you hundreds of dollars in repairs.
