If your tires are beginning to wear, it is highly recommended that you replace them before winter weather strikes. This helps your tires to navigate slick and icy roads. However, you may be unsure as to when you should replace your tires. Here are a few of the signs that your tires may need to be replaced.
Your Tread is Worn
One of the biggest warning signs that you need new tires is the tread being worn on your existing tires. You should replace the tires when there is approximately 4/32" of tread left or less. But how can you tell how much tread is left? Easy! Take a penny and put it so the head is facing downward. If the hairline is covered by tread, you have enough tread left. However, if the tread doesn't cover Abraham Lincoln's hair, it is time to replace the tires.
There Are Damaged Areas on the Tire
If you can look at your tires and see signs of damage to them, they need to be replaced. You may be able to see small bubbles on the tire, see where the tread has worn off or even see divots in the tires where rocks or other road debris have hit the tire. In any case, when damage is present, the tires need to go.
You Notice Vibration While Driving
Another sign that indicates your tires need to be replaced is vibration while driving. Your tires should help to make your drive smoother, not rougher. However, as your tires age and wear, you may feel more road vibration than before, letting you know that it is time for the tires to be replaced.
Your Tires Are Over 10 Years Old
Lastly, most tires are not designed to last longer than ten years or 100,000 miles. After five years or 75,000 miles, your tires should be inspected at least one to two times yearly. After ten years and 100,000 miles, they have hit a point where they can degrade at any point due to age and wear. Even if they look to be in good condition, most experts recommend changing them out at this interval.
