Radiators and Cooling Systems:
Before the dog days of summer hit, it is a good idea to have your cooling system flushed and new coolant put into your cooling system. Part of your cooling systems routine maintenance should be to pressure test your radiator. Many times problems with your cooling system can be attributed to faulty radiator cap. Hoses can also be a weak link when the summers heat drives up temperatures. It is much less expensive to replace hoses that are questionable than it is to suffer a breakdown while en route and have to be towed back to a repair shop.
Does Your Radiator Need Replacement?
Car Temperature: The temperature of your gauge should behave fairly normal. If it starts to rise higher than normal (or fall) then it is likely you have a cooling system problem. Sometimes that can be as simple as having low coolant levels or you may need a new thermostat.
You Can See Steam: Pin-sized holes in a hose can cause steam to be seen, especially at stop lights. If you see steam, bring your car in now as your car is running out of water.
You Have to Keep Adding Water/Coolant: If you have to keep topping off the water/coolant in your reservoir then you have a leak somewhere. Sometimes that is just a faulty radiator cap. Other reasons may be that there is a hole in your radiator.
Your Car Hisses: When your car makes hissing noise you hear steam escaping. This is a sure sign that your car needs a radiator repair or a hose replaced.
